STUDIO PROKOPIOU
X HUNGRY

PHOTOGRAPHY & DISTORTED DRAG

For their residency, photographers Studio Prokopiou collaborated with their muse, cult international drag personality and surreal artist Hungry. Together they explored themes of the impermanence of beauty by creating three tableaux, inspired by the decadent Mandrake hotel.

Residents of The Mandrake had special access to a photoshoot in progress ‘Peep Show - Rot in Paradise’ which took place in the hotels Masha Hari theatre. The work was produced in collaboration with floral artist Stuart Fenwick.

The Mandrake regularly hosts similar fascinating and engaging artistic talent. So why not book your stay in one of the most unusual places to stay in London in advance?

Studio Prokopiou - London-based Phillip Prokopiou was born to Greek immigrants in South Africa. The self-taught photographer established a practice in 2014 under the name Studio Prokopiou, co-founded with his partner in life and art, Greek native, Panos Poimenidis. Their work is an exploration of self-invention and identity, informed by art history, pop culture and classical mythology incorporating the artifice of camp. The images are the result of an ongoing dialogue between the duo and their subjects.

"Hungry : The distorted drag queen touring and collaborating with Björk - When she is not transforming the Icelandic singer/songwriter, the young creative spends time honing her animalistic style of make-up. Leather cut-outs, chicken bones, silicone pieces and wildly eclectic face painting are just a few of the techniques the self-titled “distorted drag queen” Hungry lives by. And with nearly half a million Instagram followers and counting, you’ve likely encountered her surreal, boundary-breaking imagery at least once."
